Subject: Possible Failed Back Surgery

Question: I had spinal surgery 6 months ago and had fusion. From x-rays it appears they used two screws, etc. I have never felt these, but didn't have severe pain before surgery. Since the surgery, the pain has been unreal. Is this to be expected? I go to see the surgeons, but they don't talk. When I said the pain was excruciating, and then said that of course Murphy's Law always follows me, the surgeon got up and walked out and said he didn't like Murphy. Can you offer me an explanation as to how long the pain should or will last. I'm becoming so cranky from always hurting and not being able to do my routine work. Thanks for any help.

Answer: Surgery is supposed to help your pain. So obviously by now you should be well on the road to getting better, not feeling worse. Based on the behavior of your surgeon, he/she is not a spine specialist nor an expert on failed back surgery. You need to get a detailed evaluation at this time from a spine center.
