Subject: Degenerating Discs--How To Avoid Surgery

Question: I recently have been diagnosed as having 3 degenerative lumbar discs. The middle one is prolapsed mainly on the left side. As a result I have altered sensation in my leg and numbness in my left foot.

I am 34 years old, a nurse, and do not want to have surgery if there is any other option. Could you please advise me of any other options. Thank you.

Answer: The two other options are physical therapy and spinal injections. In at least 1/2 of the patients, a series of two to four transforaminal epidural steroid injections will improve the situation markedly. Physical therapy is very important as well to strenthen your muscles and to make sure your body movements are perfect to spare your back.
